It blends two ratios with equal weight: total new B2B sales postings against a baseline period (scale), and the number of distinct companies posting at least one such role against the same baseline (breadth).

Index = 100 x [0.5 x (postings / baseline postings) + 0.5 x (hiring companies / baseline hiring companies)]

The baseline is July 20 to August 16, 2026, the first four-week period we could confirm sits in a stable, comparable data-classification regime. One index point equals roughly a 1% change in the blended measure. We blend the two because each fails alone: a postings count can be moved by a few large employers, while a breadth count shows whether demand is spreading or narrowing. As a sensitivity check, the scale-only and breadth-only versions read 94.4 and 92.3 this month, so the weighting does not change the conclusion.

The index counts job postings, not hires or headcount. Government data answers a different question: the BLS Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) estimates openings by industry, not by role, so it cannot isolate sales hiring or name the companies doing it. For the mechanics of reading postings as a company-level signal, see our guide to using job openings data as a company growth signal. Every PredictLeads posting carries a
first_seen_at
timestamp, which is what lets the index count new postings by discovery date rather than open inventory.

October 2026 reading: fewer companies hiring, not smaller sales teams

Between the baseline (July 20 to August 16) and the current period (August 17 to September 13, 2026), US B2B sales postings fell from 122,912 to 115,996, and distinct hiring employers fell from 25,901 to 23,904.

Metric

Baseline (Jul 20 to Aug 16)

Current (Aug 17 to Sep 13)

Change

Provisional (Sep 14 to Oct 11)

New B2B sales postings

122,912

115,996

-5.6%

140,263

Distinct hiring employers

25,901

23,904

-7.7%

30,096

Postings per hiring employer

4.75

4.85

Up

4.66

Postings-only index

100.0

94.4

114.1

Employer-only index

100.0

92.3

116.2

US Sales Hiring Index (blended)

100.0

93.3

115.2 (provisional)

US Sales Hiring Index components by period. The companies that kept hiring posted slightly more roles each, 4.85 versus 4.75, which offset part of the breadth loss. If you sell into active sales teams, that is the read that matters: 1,997 fewer companies were building sales capacity this period, and the ones still building were not building less.

Why we lead with 93.3, not the provisional 115.2

The most recent four weeks, September 14 to October 11, 2026, read 115.2: 140,263 postings from 30,096 employers. We do not lead with that number because the newest weeks of any snapshot have not finished duplicate and filtering. At the time of this snapshot, the share of those weeks’ postings flagged as duplicates, reposts, or job-board listings was still falling week over week, the pattern of a cohort that has not been fully processed. Under-filtered weeks can overstate counts until filtering catches up, which takes several weeks.

The settled, comparable reading is therefore 93.3. The 115.2 reading is directional: it suggests September hiring recovered, and we will confirm or revise it in the November edition. The rebound is also breadth-led (the employer-only index reads 116.2), so if it holds, it reverses the pattern above. Sales Engineering and Solutions Consulting fell at a similar rate (-10.8%, 2,296 to 2,047). SDR/BDR postings fell a smaller 7.0% (6,767 to 6,294). A steeper drop in closing roles than in prospecting roles is consistent with companies slowing new-logo capacity first, though postings cannot show the motive.

Sales Leadership (Director, VP, and C-level) fell 14.3%, from 4,201 to 3,601. Fewer senior commercial searches is consistent with companies holding leadership hires while they set next year’s plans. Partnerships/Channel fell 17.9% (1,603 to 1,316), the steepest drop of any family with a meaningful base. It is also small enough that a handful of employers can move it.

What held, and what to read with caution

Account Management barely moved (11,444 to 11,422), consistent with companies protecting existing-customer revenue while slowing new-logo hiring. Sales Ops/RevOps (499 to 485) and Sales Enablement (165 to 196) run on bases under 500 postings a month, so read their changes as directional, not as precise percentages.

About 70% of postings in both periods carry generic titles such as Sales Representative or Sales Manager that do not name a modern GTM subfunction. That bucket fell 4.9%, in the same direction as the named families, so the decline is not a classification artifact. In the provisional four weeks, every named family reads above its baseline, led by Account Management at 119.2 among families with a meaningful base; treat those readings as directional too.

Role families here come from title text. Non-profit Organization Management posts 17 to 25 sales-category roles per hiring employer across all three periods, roughly 3.5 to 5 times the cross-industry average of 4.75 to 4.85. A small number of large organizations drive that industry’s totals, so read any industry-level claim about either one with that concentration in mind.

Retail remains the largest labeled industry (8,177 postings from 672 companies). Our title filter removes consumer roles such as Sales Associate and Store Manager, but some retailers post genuine wholesale, field, or B2B account roles, so we did not exclude companies by industry label alone. Some residual consumer-sales noise likely remains in that row. Biotechnology Research has no baseline row in this edition, so it shows no change. To find them, we started with the 20,699 companies that carried a validated Sales-department hiring-surge flag in PredictLeads data over the trailing 90 days as of October 23, 2026. A surge means a company’s recent sales postings jumped well above its own prior 12-month monthly average. We removed consumer-retail and clearly non-B2B employers, then selected 20 that show unusual acceleration, a sales function appearing from near zero, or a market entry. This is a curated list, not a ranking by size.

Read them with three cautions. First, a surge is an observable change in hiring allocation, not a confirmed contract, raise, or launch; every interpretation below is a hypothesis to check. Second, the 30-day counts end on the signal dates (October 13 to 16, 2026), so they sit in the provisional window, not the settled period behind the 93.3 reading. Third, several multiples rest on single-digit counts: 4 postings against a 0.1 monthly average reads as 40x, which is a real change but a small one.

Step-changes from a near-zero base

Benev Company (Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, 51-200 employees): 29 sales postings in 30 days against a 0.7 monthly average, 41.4x. A step-change this size is consistent with a territory or distributor-network launch, which no public labor statistic would show.

MDT (IT Services and IT Consulting, 51-200): 4 postings against 0.1, 40x. A sales function appearing from almost nothing.

Mygrant Glass Company (Glass, Ceramics and Concrete Manufacturing, 1,001-5,000): 7 against 0.2, 35x. An established auto-glass wholesale distributor that rarely hires sales reps; consistent with a distribution-network expansion.

Watchtower Security (Security Systems Services, 51-200): 4 against 0.2, 20x, a security-systems integrator building sales capacity from near zero.

US Air Conditioning Distributors (Wholesale, 201-500): 7 against 0.4, 17.5x, the kind of account or territory build-out that can precede a new product line or region.

Horvath & Partners Management Consulting (Business Consulting and Services, 1,001-5,000): 12 against 0.8, 15x, business-development capacity well beyond its own history.

Amplix (IT Services and IT Consulting, 51-200) and Carr, Riggs & Ingram (Business Consulting and Services, 1,001-5,000): 4 postings each against 0.3, about 13x. A build-out this fast is consistent with a new contract that needs program and account-management capacity, though postings alone cannot confirm one.

ClearPay Processing (Financial Services, 11-50): 41 postings against 13.6, 3.0x, an already elevated pace that tripled again.

Gondola (Technology, Information and Media, 2-10): 30 postings against 8.4, 3.6x.

Check the last two before you act. A company listed at 2-10 or 11-50 employees that averages 8 to 14 sales postings a month is posting faster than its listed headcount can easily absorb. That can mean a stale size band, commission-only or contract roles, or one role posted across many locations. Population: newly observed US job postings, resolved to a US state or to “United States,” tagged with the sales job category. A title-level B2B filter excludes titles that match retail, consumer, banking, or generic customer-service patterns (for example Sales Associate, Store Manager, Personal Banker, and Customer Service Representative), a rule validated against a manual sample of the remaining population.

Remaining titles are classified into role families by title text, with an “other/generic” catch-all. The Sales Leadership family uses PredictLeads seniority levels (Director, VP, C-level, President, Head). The metric is newly observed postings by first-discovery date, not active inventory: we tested open-inventory counts and found the closure signal more exposed to the processing lag described below.

Index windows

Baseline: July 20 to August 16, 2026. Current (settled): August 17 to September 13, 2026. Provisional: September 14 to October 11, 2026. Hiring-company counts are distinct employers, summed across company-size bands. The formula and sensitivity check are in the first section above.

The data-quality finding behind the baseline

While validating completeness, we found that the share of discovered US postings that PredictLeads excludes as duplicates, reposts, or job-board listings rose from a 2025 norm of about 28% to 32% (July 21 to October 6, 2025) to a peak of about 50% to 52% in the weeks of June 15 to June 29, 2026, before settling. It measured 36.4% in the baseline window and 37.8% in the current window. Raw discovery volume, before any filtering, held between about 650,000 and 1.2 million postings a week from July 2025 to October 2026 with no sustained decline, so this was a filtering change, not a coverage loss.

Because filtered counts from the elevated period are not comparable with counts on either side of it, we build no comparison across it, and the baseline starts after it. The same check is why the newest four weeks are provisional: duplicate detection takes several weeks to mature for each cohort of postings.

Hiring surges and the funding cross-check

The watchlist and the funding test use a company-level Sales-department hiring-surge flag: a company’s recent sales postings measured against its own prior 12-month monthly average. The funding test compares companies flagged in the trailing 90 days (as of October 23, 2026) with all companies posting at least one US B2B sales role in the current period, checking each for a Financing Events record in the trailing 18 months. The groups overlap and use different windows, and we report the ratio rather than a statistical test, so read it as an absence of lift, not a measured negative effect.

What this index does not claim, and revisions

Hiring is an observable allocation signal, not proof of a purchase, financing event, or business outcome. Phrases such as “consistent with” are deliberate; we do not claim intent or causation from hiring data alone. Postings measure hiring intent, not hires.

The index updates monthly, with windows rolling forward once each month’s data has matured, roughly four to six weeks after discovery, so expect the provisional reading to be revised. This URL previously carried our September 2026 sales and RevOps hiring statistics, built on 30-day windows from July 8 to September 5, 2026 and a different sales population. Part of that comparison falls before the July 20, 2026 baseline start described above, so the September figures are superseded and are not comparable with this edition.

How PredictLeads Job Openings data powers the index

Every number in this index comes from data you can query yourself. PredictLeads Job Openings holds 279.2M+ job postings since 2018 across 2.9M+ company websites, with 10.2M active openings at any time. Each record carries
categories
(including sales), a
seniority
level, an O*NET occupation code in
onet_data
, structured
location_data
, and
first_seen_at
and
last_seen_at
timestamps, plus a company reference that links to firmographics in the Companies dataset.

That is enough to rebuild any cut in this report for your own accounts: a monthly count of new sales postings per account, an alert when an account’s sales postings jump above its own trailing average, or a breadth filter for accounts that posted any sales role this month. The Job Openings dataset documentation lists every field. Pair hiring with Financing Events (210,800+ events since 2016) and News Events (10M+ events since 2016 across 37 categories) to see what else changed at the same accounts, as our guide to combining hiring, news, funding, and technology signals describes.

PredictLeads is a data provider, not a platform. The US Sales Hiring Index reads 93.3 for August 17 to September 13, 2026 (baseline 100): new US B2B sales postings fell 5.6% to 115,996, and distinct hiring employers fell 7.7% to 23,904. The decline came from fewer companies hiring, mostly companies with 200 or fewer employees, while companies still hiring posted slightly more roles each. The newest four weeks read a provisional 115.2, which suggests a September rebound the next edition will confirm or revise.

What is the US Sales Hiring Index?
The US Sales Hiring Index is a monthly PredictLeads measure of US B2B sales hiring that blends scale (new sales postings) and breadth (distinct companies hiring) against a baseline of 100. The baseline is July 20 to August 16, 2026. It counts newly observed postings after removing duplicates, job-board listings, and retail, banking, and customer-service titles. It is built from PredictLeads Job Openings, which holds 279.2M+ postings since 2018.

Why is the latest sales hiring reading of 115.2 only provisional?
Because the newest weeks of any snapshot have not finished duplicate and job-board filtering. At the time of this snapshot, the share of those weeks’ postings flagged as duplicates or job-board listings was still falling week over week, the pattern of a cohort that has not been fully processed, and under-filtered weeks can overstate counts. The settled, comparable reading is 93.3. The 115.2 reading will be confirmed or revised in the next edition.

Do companies hire more salespeople after raising funding?
Not in this data. Of 20,699 companies with a Sales-department hiring surge in the trailing 90 days, 2.9% had a financing event in the prior 18 months, versus 3.6% of all 23,904 companies posting a US B2B sales role, a ratio of 0.81x. The groups overlap and use different windows, so the result shows no positive lift rather than a negative effect. PredictLeads Financing Events covers 210,800+ funding events since 2016 if you want to run the same test on your own accounts.

Which sales roles are companies cutting back on in 2026?
Partnerships/Channel (-17.9%, 1,603 to 1,316 postings) and Sales Leadership (-14.3%, 4,201 to 3,601) fell hardest between the July 20 to August 16 and August 17 to September 13, 2026 periods. Sales Engineering (-10.8%) and Account Executive (-10.4%) followed, while SDR/BDR fell 7.0% and Account Management held flat at -0.2%.
